Saturday Night Sage, by Noah Lekas "Private filming"

There will be a private filming for a short film for Saturday Night Sage is the first full-length collection of poetry by writer, Noah C. Lekas. Hailed as a “punk séance for the beat spirit,” the 42-poem collection examines mysticism and menial labor in modern America.

The first literary release from San Diego record label, Blind Owl, Saturday Night Sage spans coast and country from post-industrial Wisconsin to the psychedelic rhythm of San Francisco and the poetic streets of New York City. Drawing inspiration from Jack Kerouac, Patti Smith, Bob Kaufman and Nick Cave, Lekas navigates whiskey-soaked revelation, contrarious theology and dwindling folklore with equal parts reverence and restlessness.

In a time when spirituality is often confrontational and nuance is trivialized, Saturday Night Sage gives voice to an often over-looked and undervalued experience, defining the poetic voice of blue-collar mysticism.

The limited-edition paperback features original cover art by Rock ‘n’ Roll artist Alan Forbes.

"Big Fish", by Tim Burton (Lhooq's Thursday Night Movie)

THIS THURSDAY (Thursday 09/12/19) just after sunset 🌅 Join us as we screen the Tim Burton Classic, Big Fish. The 2003 Adventure Fantasy film written, directed and produced by Tim Burton based on the Daniel Wallace novel "Big Fish: A Novel Of Mythic Proportions". Big Fish begins as United Press International journalist Will Bloom and his French freelance photojournalist wife Josephine Bloom, who is pregnant with their first child, leave their Paris base to return to Will's hometown of Ashton, Alabama on the news that his father, Edward Bloom, stricken with cancer, will soon die, he being taken off chemotherapy treatment. Although connected indirectly through Will's mother/Edward's wife, Sandra Bloom, Will has been estranged from his father for three years since his and Josephine's wedding. Will's issue with his father is the fanciful tales Edward has told of his life all his life, not only to Will but the whole world. As a child when Edward was largely absent as a traveling salesman, Will believed those stories, but now realizes that he does not know his father, who, as he continues to tell these stories, he will never get to know unless Edward comes clean with the truth before he dies. On the brink of his own family life beginning, Will does not want to be the kind of father Edward has been to him. One of those stories from Edward's childhood - that he saw his own death in the glass eye of a witch - led to him embracing life since he would not have to fear death knowing when and how it would eventually come. The question is whether Will will be able to reconcile Edward's stories against his real life, either directly from Edward before he dies and/or from other sources, and thus allow Will to come to a new understanding of himself and his life, past, present and future.
The film stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Billy Crudup and Helena Bonham Carter.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

THIS THURSDAY (Thursday 07/11/19) just after sunset 🌅Join us as we screen Sorry to Bother You written and directed by debut feature filmmaker Boots Riley. The film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Steven Yeun, Armie Hammer, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Danny Glover and the voices of David Cross, Patton Oswalt and Lily James. A strange, surreal & hilarious satire guided by the intentionally unsteady hand of activist-rapper turned debut director, Boots Riley. Its commentary on media, society, race and working-class issues are poignant, brutally honest and consistently hilarious. The story follows Cassius, an African-American telemarketer in Oakland. When told to use his "white voice" on the job while making calls, he quickly rises through the ranks of his profession--and ends up getting a hefty promotion. All of a sudden, things start to spiral out of control. The film's social consciousness and commentary intersect in ways that are thoughtful, snappy, and deeply rooted in (often unfortunately) a sense of genuine realism. Yet the film's image of the world is not equal to our society with microscopic precision, as its humor often tends to look at current societal issues with the mirror of a macabre fun-house.
