SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

THIS THURSDAY (Thursday 07/11/19) just after sunset 🌅Join us as we screen Sorry to Bother You written and directed by debut feature filmmaker Boots Riley. The film stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Steven Yeun, Armie Hammer, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Danny Glover and the voices of David Cross, Patton Oswalt and Lily James. A strange, surreal & hilarious satire guided by the intentionally unsteady hand of activist-rapper turned debut director, Boots Riley. Its commentary on media, society, race and working-class issues are poignant, brutally honest and consistently hilarious. The story follows Cassius, an African-American telemarketer in Oakland. When told to use his "white voice" on the job while making calls, he quickly rises through the ranks of his profession--and ends up getting a hefty promotion. All of a sudden, things start to spiral out of control. The film's social consciousness and commentary intersect in ways that are thoughtful, snappy, and deeply rooted in (often unfortunately) a sense of genuine realism. Yet the film's image of the world is not equal to our society with microscopic precision, as its humor often tends to look at current societal issues with the mirror of a macabre fun-house.

Belisario Baltazar, Guatemalan Poet & Novelist (special semi-impromptu event)

Belisario Baltazar, Guatemalan Poet & Novelist

Born in Nueva Esperanza, Tejutla, San Marcos, Guatemala on August 31, 1992.

He began writing at 17 yrs old and wrote his first book "La Historia de un Poeta (A Poet's Story)", but he left my dreams, out of necessity and got a job. Six years later came to the United States and continued to work in construction.

In December 2017, he was asked, “What are my dreams?”  He started questioning where he was in his life and where would be in his future? ANdherealized his dream of being a writer never left him and he initiated his original dream and got back to writing his book. Thanks to that dream he became a published author. He quickly began publishing and  traveling around the world talking about his books and he has not stopped since.

Writing is a difficult career path and few of his friends or family believed it waspossible, but he believed, yet he still needed motivation. Then he wrote "LA IDEA DE SOÑAR EN GRANDE". which became his own personal motivational book. Three months after his first book was published, he published the "AZARES DEL DESTINO(La Historia de un Poeta)", based on his first book. He is now working on his third book, a novel based on a true story.

Paddle Out Fest

ina Fake/Southern Beacons/Rain on Fridays/Burnout Reef/Sean Jones/Serendipity/Katie M.

That’s a lot of music and I guess that’s why they are calling it a “fest”?!?! A festival of Punk Rock Spring/Summer good times!!!

Tina Fake played their very first live show ever here at Lhooq Books and they killed it. the band was passionate, driven, Loud, smart, a little crazy and tight as fuck! You really can’t ask for and get any more from a bands first time on stage. Plus, they packed the house! And it was all them! their friends & family came out in droves to support them and they did not disappoint! THESE GUYS ARE PRETTY YOUNG, BUT THEY PLAY WITH THE HEARTS AND ETHOS OF TRUE PUNK. Now they are coming back with a massive line up of friends and other bands they have met, connected with and collaborated with on the road and round town.

We are proud to present the rising stars of a scene that supposedly doesn’t exist. But try telling that to the hundreds that will be at Lhooq this coming Saturday 04/13/19!! We are starting early, 5pm to get everyone on the bill a full set! This also means we are going to do our best to present this like a local backyard/beach party with NO BBQ, but plenty of Beer, etc (please do not bring your own because whatever we provide you can get cheap and it will help serve the greater good…more funding for the nonprofit and the artists/performers.) Ultimately, all we ask is a minimum donation of $5, but we do think you can (and should) do more!?!?! Just check out this list of acts and they are all amazing!

You can donate/buy a $5 ticket here on our website http://www.;hooqxrealism.com/tickets in our shop prior to or day of, if not sold out by then, And if you really want to help support the bands and even our nonprofit you can donate more by clicking the donate block on the home page. All net profits go to the bands, and with this many bands we need a lot of donations to spread it around. Support the Cause and the Cause will support you!

The Exrealism Project Presents: His Apologies & Green Destiny “Sound & Vision” /kəˌlabəˈrāSH(ə)n/ With CraftLab

Wrapping up our special events for February. We have “Sound & Vision”.

The Sound: Co-headlining we have a beautiful solo performance,  “His Apologies” @hisapologies a veteran singer/songwriter who has volunteered to open with his heartfelt, often heartbreaking lyrics, mixed with a an almost necessary sardonic world view. yet all combined, we find his music to be painfully honest and ultimately life affirming.  beautiful solo performance.

Closing the night is an experimental instrumental, “Green Destiny” lead by Forrest, a young protégé of many genres. In this current project his band is experimenting with sound and exploring a hybrid of the often loud, crunch of sonic noise mixed with ambient drone, dripping with melodic tones, taking you on a journey, getting lost in space, then crashing & floating back to earth.

The Vision: Both performances will be layered with interactive Neo Wave multi-layered projection art. The audience can stand back and watch it all as a whole or come inside the light and interact with the art, light, sound & Vision. digital art projections by CraftLab.(@craftlabtomato)

This is a nonprofit fundraiser show: 100% of the profits are dispersed to the artists/performers and nonprofit fundraiser. If you want donate more simply click the black “DONATE” on the home page. There you can enter any amount you wish. The donations are specifically for the formal launch of the local & international artist/activist nonprofit. Thank you for help the lives of thousands, and we hope millions (that is until we no longer have so much suffering in the world.) Our artists, activists, employees & volunteers, etc work together to expose the injustices and take direct action through collaboration and coordination via our nonprofit i”The Exrealism Project” working locally & globally. Thank you! lhooq/Exrealism

Matt Hensley & Brittany McGregor w/ Special guests

Special show. Matt Hensley (of Floggying Molly) co headlines & Collaborates with Brittany McGregor, Singer of “The Sparrow”.
Matt will start off the show with a set of raw traditional Irish folk. Then he will transition over and Sit in with Brittany McGregor to play some Mid Century French Street music! Brit @wretchedmathilde @lasparrowsings is a talented LA based singer doing the set in a raunchy fluent French voice. Both styles are romantic, sad drinking songs. Perfect for Valentines eve. Authentic, raw, genuinely beautiful renditions of the greatest Mid Century French singers....such as Edith Piaf, Jacques Brél, Charles Aznavour and more. Our show will be a combination of talent, rough street style, freedom of expression and creativity. Sung by Brittny Mcgragor, an extraordinarily gifted singer and Francophile, backed up by the likes of Matt Hensley on accordion, and more surprise guest musicians from LA.

LOW HUMS / RED RIBBON / THE OXEN (special set)

TUESDAY EVENING 10/09/18 7pm-ish to whenever?!?!. We are so very proud to present three of our of our mostest-est favorite frickin bands who have ever played at LHOOQ/EXREALISM before! The Low Hums, Red Ribbon and The Oxen, who are allplaying here together on October 9th, But let’s me explain. The Low Hums played the first show we ever had, in fact, we booked the show and had it in the parking lot before our Lhooq Books was even open! We filled the parking lot with rock and free love 😉 and they helped set the tone for all shows to follow. What’s the tone? The tone is having serious underground musicians play their hearts out to an open and welcoming crowd where everyone leaves the standard pretentious, scenester style attitude at the door and entering into a new way of listening to the real thing by fucking enjoying themselves?!?! The Low Hums have played here two times sense then and Red Ribbon blew us away while on their first I tour as Red Ribbon, all the members are experienced pros, but together they have found something extraordinarily special and they are currently blowing up. Welcome to stardom with a strong emerging cult following!!!! We honestly would be happy to have just one of these bands play, but both...on the same night!?! This is something no one should miss. This is the one you’ll be saying for the rest of your life with love, “I was there?!?!” This is the one. @lowhums @eedanner #lowhums#redribbion from @union.zero records coming to us all the way from #Seattle you can kick my ass for saying this, but these guys are Seattle’s #musicscene#secondcoming. And finally, but definitely not least the equally as talented, charged band and arguably the best band based in the Greater San Diego / North County are today, “The Oxen” to help us make it through a Tuesday night while limiting the odds against any noise complaints and thus a premature shut down they will be playing a very special stripped down set! And dare I say more often than not these are the kinds of sets that also become the unforgettable. (side note: and don’t miss them for our second annual Halloween Party/show at the end of the month.)  #lhooqxrealism #artists#activists #undergroundvenue and #bookstore you got a problem with that? 😉✌🏼 it’s all #love but truly these bands are the best you’re gonna see #truerock#undergroundmusic #wherelifehappens#creativefreedom #createyourcommunity#friendsforlife #pureartists #therealthing#lifetimeofmemories #thankyou

Obscured Modernism - Presented in film photography

Lhooq/Exrealism Presents a New art, photography, mixed media event and just to be clear we have lots of Alcohol!

As usual we here at Lhooq/Exrealism are always looking for new insights and explorations of different mediums. This time we found it with the collective behind Obscure Modernism. Everything we do here is a collaborative effort, but the creative vision of this show comes from these guys (And I don't want to add this part, but guys and GALS?!?! Sorry, when I say guys as a group I have no gender attachment to it, but just to be straight and solid ✌🏽)

Greg Z. - From the wild mind of Greg Zamarripa, presented photographs depict another world only seen before by the artist himself.

Alanna D. - “Le film Violet” taken on Lomochrome Purple.

Steven L. - “Life Goes On" - Enticing Color and Black and white photography from the bustling streets of New York

We had the opportunity to see Steven in action while doing a professional photo shoot at Lhooq/Exrealism and it was well beyond on point. He had me sold.

But then a few weeks later we all met up and it was a kind of love and kinship at first sight. They got used and we got them and within minutes we could finish each others sentences and visions.

Simply put it is going to be a beautiful show and an amazing time. This is not a thing to do to get your monthly quota of culture in.This is a true experience full of "Lifers" people who truly came to art by a calling. Having their work all up in it's full glory, plus all their amazing friends from all over the West Coast, primarily SD and LA along with the experience many of you have come to know and love from Lhooq/Exrealism will be just an amazing Art Rock Kick ass way to start off the summer?!?!?! We couldn't be happier to have them as our guests.

....and did I mention we have copious amounts of high end local brew! And the hard stuff if you know the secret password(s)
